Today is officially the last day 2009-2010 year and a new chapater unfolds tomorrow! What a crazy year this had been despite not everything going the way I desired, sports, personal life etc. Here are some of it I would like to share, the bad ones and the good ones.
NFL Football : Well Tom Brady returned into the lineups after being out of the season last year, when the Patriots missed the playoffs with a 12-4 record. The Patriots this year was okay.... finishing the season with a 10-6 record. The playoff was pretty disappointing, as they were edged by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round. Despite the Patriots losing in the first round, I was glad to witness the New Orleans Saints upsetting the hated Indianapolis Colts in the superbowl. What a game it was, witnessing Saints quarterback Drew Brees outdueling Peyton Manning of the Colts. So, it wasn't really a bad year after all.
NHL Hockey : With the addition of Mikael Samuelsson, Tanner Glass and defensemen Christian Ehrhoff, Aaron Rome and Andrew Albert and backup goaltender Andrew Raycroft. The Vancouver Canucks finished the season with a 49-28-5 record, topping the NorthWest Division two years in a row, while finishing second for being the best offensive team in the league. Henrik Sedin also won his first career Art Ross Trophy and Harts Trophy for accumulating the most points and being the player of the year. As a Canucks fan, I was impressed to see him win it. During the 2010 stanley cup playoffs the Canucks played the Los Angeles Kings and advanced to the second round in 6 games, but the playoff campaign has came to an end, after losing to the eventual stanley cup champions, the Chicago Blackhawks, when they beat the Philadelphia Flyers in 6 games. I admit I didn't like the outcome, but I couldn't say I was upset mainly because the overtime goal by Patrick Kane was hilarious. I laughed every single bits of it with a few friends who was at my place that day.
NBA Basketball : The Phoenix Suns with the addition of Channing Frye as bench, the Suns finished the season with a 54-28 record, placing 3rd in the western conference. In the first round, they faced the Portland Trail Blazers and ended the series in 6 games. The Spurs were up next in the second round. After years of elimination in the post season by the Spurs, the Suns showed no mercy, as they took a 4 game sweep over the San Antonio Spurs. In the western conference final, the all powerful Los Angeles Lakers was their opponent. After trailing 2-0 in the series, the Suns tied the series at 2, including a 50 points combined performance by the Suns' bench in game 4. In game 5, the momentum belonged to the Lakers after Jason Richardson nailed the 3 point tying basket, as Ron Artest had the buzzer beater to win the game and the Lakers would go on to win the series and the championship, after beating the Boston Celtics in the finals. Yes I admit, I was pretty upset when Lakers won, but got over it the next day.
Fifa world cup : Not really impressed with England's performance this year, from start to finish. In the first two games, they finished with a tie against the Americans and the Algerians. They still managed to qualify for the round of 16, after beating Slovenia on the final game, but could not top their group. Was furious after losing 4-1 to the Germans in the first round after a horrible start and a disallowed tying goal by Frank Lampard. Despite losing to Germany, England didn't do as bad as Argentina, who collapsed right after their second goal against. However, the hated Portugal lost to Spain, which made me felt better. When Spain beat Germany in the semi final I was delighted. Thanks to Paul The Octopus for predicting Spain winning. Spain would eventually go on to win the world cup by beating Netherland in the final. What a day it was watching the finals outside of a restaurant with dozens of soccer fans.
Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics : I'm totally speechless when it comes to this because the winter games was just absolutely AMAZING!!! Canada has made history by achieving the most gold medals won, by a host nation in winter olympics history. After a very slow start, Alex Bilodeau was the first Canadian Athlete to win gold in the 2010 games for Canada. Later on, 13 more gold medals were won, end of the first week and all the way to the end of the olympics. I had a very fun 2 weeks, joining up with a group of friends to watch Team Canada rock the ice from the start of the prelims all the way to their gold medal victory over the Americans. I cannot be more happy on February 28th at downtown Vancouver celebrating with many other Canadian supporters than any other olympic days, by far the best day of the year!
Hockey Pool : Yes, hockey pool. A very slow start, earlier during the season due to injuries with winger Patrik Elias and center Eric Staal. While my two main goalies, Tomas Vokoun and Carey Price also played poorly for me. My season turned around following a 11-3 win against the team that finished 3rd last year. With the addition of winger Corey Perry and defensemen Shea Weber, my team started improving. When Patrik Elias and Eric Staal came back, I dropped my two main goalies for two other goalies, Jaroslav Halak and Jimmy Howard. This seem to be the perfect combination as my team finished 4th in the regular season. In the playoffs, after facing the 3rd seed team and prevailing by a score of 8-3, I go on to win the championship by beating the first two seed teams capturing 8 of 14 categories in each of the matchups. I also proved that being a high scoring team is not the right winning formula, especially in the post season. That happened to me last year, in the regular season I finished first but in the playoffs, my players just stopped producing, while my head to head opponent racked up all the categories with decent scoring. So I'm officially the 2010 hockey pool champs!!
Driving : Okay, when it comes to driving, I just get annoyed easily. Mainly because I do not enjoy driving at all, but I still had to take lessons. After a few months of lesson, I took myself and took the road test. Despite having a very easy examiner, nervousness and inexperience had a negative impact on me. Also, driving too slowly, shoulder check inconsistency and car adjustment were my major problems during the exam. I had a few more driving lessons before attempting the road test. Thanks to the motivation of the Roberto Luongo jersey that my mother offered to get me if I passed, I was able to pass the road test on the second attempt. Later during the day, I received my desired Luongo jersey! (FYI, I ditched family dinner on the day I failed my first road exam, to watch the Vancouver Canucks prevail over the Los Angeles Kings in game 4 of the quarterfinals by a score of 6-4!!)
Also been to places I haven't visisted for such a long time. Was at Kitslano Beach with a few friends to watch the fireworks. I've attended the Mexican, Spanish and China's session. Had a lot of fun and I couldn't ask for more. Also, we went to watch Taming The Shrew. Despite the fact I haven't studied the play yet, it was a lot of fun. especially when we had French food for dinner before we watched the play.
I returned to work as a PNE Sweeper this year, even though I didn't want to go back, I met new people and made new friends with the people in my crew.
School starts tomorrow and I will totally miss all the fun I had this year! Hope for the best in 2011!!
